Friday, October 9

Walkabout at Work Leader Orientation (Noon - 1:30 pm)

This course is offered by the Heart and Stroke Walk About folks and is a fun way to help those who want to support walking at work. Walkabout at Work is a fun extension to the Walkabout Leader program intended for those who wish to support walking at work. Walkabout at Work leaders can contribute to creating a culture of walking in Nova Scotia in several key ways:

  • Lead a Walkabout at Work group in person or virtually
  • Advocate for the adoption of workplace walking policies
  • Advocate / support stair climbing Policies/Activities
  • Advocate for active transportation to/from work (walking, carpooling, etc)

Lantern Tour of Riverside Cemetary (7:00 pm)

Location: 425-499 Trenton Rd, New Glasgow

Come to the Riverside Cemetery on Trenton Road for a guided historic ghost walk brought to you by Ships and Spirits Walking Tours. Explore by lantern some of the secrets of many of New Glasgow’s most prominent citizens such as why Captain MacKenzie placed his brother’s body in a casket of rum. Bring along a flashlight.

Jitney Trail Journey for Families (10:00 am)

This 2.5 km walk along the Jitney is a great interactive adventure for parents and kids. Brought to you by the authors of an up and coming local family trail adventure book, your guides will provide you with all the materials needed to see the Jitney in a new and exciting way. Meet behind the DeCoste Centre.

Intro to Orienteering in Trenton Park (1:00 pm)

Come and quickly learn how to use a compass and map then head out on one of 2 courses; an easier course for families and a harder course for those wanting a bigger challenge. Find as many control points as possible in a fixed time period to win some great prizes. Maps and compasses will be provided.

Intro to Geocaching at Fitzpatrick Mtn (10:00 am)

Try one of the fastest-growing activities on the planet at Stonehame Chalets. Geocaching involves using a GPS unit to locate hidden 'caches' or treasures. Cape To Cape Trail Hike in Millsville (1:00 pm)

Come hike the newly built sections of the Cape to Cape Trail, Nova Scotia’s first long distance footpath (www.capetocapetrail.ca). This scenic footpath reveals breathtaking vistas of rolling hills, the sea coast and peaceful farmland settings. Meet at the intersection of Durham Road and Stewart Road for a 2 hour hike.

Monday, October 12

The Milk Run Fun Run and Walk (9:00 am - noon)

A fun run/walk event for all ages brought to you by the Scotsburn Recreation Club. Children’s runs begin at 10 am at the Scotsburn Elementary School Field and the 5 km run/walk begins at 11 am along the nice and flat Trans Canada Trail. Pre-register by email at maxners@eastlink.ca or sign up the morning of the event at the John P. Gammon Center in Scotsburn (Rec Center).

Munroe’s Island Nature Hike (1:00 pm)

Location: Pictou, Subd. A, NS

This 10 km return hike takes you up one side of the island, around its tip, then back down the same trail. Munroe’s Island Nature Reserve is an ideal location to spot many species of wildlife. Nature enthusiast will love this hike and may catch a glimpse of eagles, geese, ducks, osprey, and possibly a fox or two. Meet your guide at Caribou Provincial Park.
