Pictou County Bikeways

The Pictou County Bikeways project was conceptualized in 2006. Since that time, we have been working tirelessly to make Pictou County the first in Nova Scotia to link urban and rural areas with bicycle routes. Now, as we approach 2009, we are proud to promote several recreational and commuter routes for cyclists to enjoy from around the world.

With a population of close to 50,000, Pictou County is a unique mix of urban and rural areas. This uniqueness lends itself to other strengths in the community, which cause it to be a number one cycle tourism destination. To name a few:

• Proximity to water - there is easy access to beaches by bicycle
• Proximity to PEI and Cape Breton
• Range of accommodations
• Festivals - numerous festivals and events occur in Pictou County each year
• Five Town Connection - the area connects the five towns of New Glasgow, Stellarton, Westville, Pictou and Trenton. A bikeways commuter route will allow you to go from town to town easily if you follow the Share the Road signs.
• Low traffic, rural roads - there are many low traffic roads ideal for cycling
• Return loops - you can start and stop at the same location after seeing a greater part of the county. The loops are many different distances and accommodate varying ability levels for riders
• The scenery - come and see for yourself!
