The Pictou County Young Naturalists Club is a fun, free way for children to informally connect with nature. We give kids positive, direct experiences in nature. Kids learn through nature talks and walks with adult naturalists who want to share their knowledge with the next generation of nature lovers.
All events are always free. Children may participate in one event, or in all events. They are welcome to join us at any point throughout the year. Each child must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate.
We meet indoors once per month for a nature presentation. This is followed by a nature walk outdoors, generally on the same topic as the presentation. Our presentations and nature walks are usually on the 1st Saturday morning of each month, from 9:00-12:00. The Pictou County YNC meets in space kindly donated by the Museum of Industry and the NSCC.
At each meeting, a volunteer guest presenter teaches about a topic related to nature. We explore a different topic each month (plants, animals, geology, fungi, astronomy, algae…). Kids also learn skills, such as how to use a field guide, a GPS, binoculars, how to survive in the woods, how to make nature journals...
On each field trip, a volunteer guest leader introduces us to nearby wild areas (trails, parks, rivers…). Kids experience nature using all their senses and learn how to protect our environment. Most importantly, they have lots of fun!
The Pictou County YNC has local volunteer leaders who attend each event to ensure the kids are safe and happy. We are always interested in guests who would like to make a nature presentation or lead a nature walk!
