Saturday, June 2nd

Official Bike Week Opening Ride (8 km return)

Museum of Industry to New Glasgow Farmers Market

9:00 am start: Museum of Industry, 147 N. Foord St, Stellarton

Lead rider: Police bike patrol

Rider restrictions: None

Family Ride on the Albion/Samson Trail to the New Glasgow Farmers’ Market for an official Proclamation by Town Crier Jim Stewart and councils of our six municipalities. Ride back as you came, or stay and join the next ride.

Bikes for Kids Dropoff/Apply for Bike by Pictou County United Way

New Glasgow Farmers Market Community Table 9 am -1 pm

Pool Noodle Ride

New Glasgow Farmers Market to Trenton Park (10 km return)

10:00 am start: New Glasgow Farmers’ Market

Lead riders: Police bike patrol

Rider restrictions: Maintain average speed of no less than 15km/hr

Demonstrate the 1 meter vehicle clearance law (Bill 93) by attaching a pool noodle to the side of your bike and riding to Trenton Park for an ice cream sandwich and some time at the duck ponds. We’ll ride back the same route to finish at the Museum of Industry.

 Sunday, June 3rd

Welcome to the “Pictou Velodrome” (Distance options: 20.4km / 39.5 km / 61 km)

Start: Pictou Visitor Information Centre 9:00 am

Sponsor: Big 8

Lead rider: Lloyd McLean

Rider restrictions: Maintain average speed of no less than 20km/hr

Join Lloyd McLean on a cycle through Pictou/Braeshore. There are three choices of distance you can cycle, so there is something for everyone. Enjoy a great morning workout with some lovely views, and good road surface to test the limits of your bike and body.

 

Hector Quay to Brown’s Point (5km return)

2:00 pm start: Hector Heritage Quay, 33 Caladh Ave, Pictou

Lead rider: Lloyd McLean

Rider Restrictions: None

Easy, family-friendly ride from the Hector Heritage Quay along the Jitney Trail to the historic landing site of the Ship Hector. Meet a visitor from the past, and enjoy some ice cream in the place where it all began.

Monday, June 4th

Workshop: “Finding the Right Bike for You”

6:00 pm start: Presenter, Kevin Waller

Kevin has great enthusiasm, and years of experience helping cyclists of all ages and skill levels find just the right ride. Event sponsors Pictou County Cycle are offering TAX FREE sale store-wide for the duration of Bike Week.

Rider restrictions: bike suitable for off-road terrain

Workshop: “How-To with Darryl: Fix a Flat, Outdoor Bike Fixing Station, and Your Basic Bike Toolkit”

Presenter: Darryl Ingram

Wednesday, June 6th

Pictou County Cycle Road Ride: Intermediate and advanced (distance options: 44 km or 66 km)

5:30 pm start: Pictou County Cycle

Lead riders: Pictou County Cycle

Rider restrictions: Maintain average speed of no less than 25 km/hr

 Thursday, June 7th

Workshop: “Commute by Bicycle? Yes, you can!”

Presenter: Lloyd McLean

Location: Pictou County Cycle, 2619 Westville Rd., New Glasgow

Lloyd McLean bikes to work in all weather, conditions and seasons. You may have seen him on his fatbike crossing the Pictou Causeway in the dead of winter. He is passionate about cycle commuting, and attests that if you have the right clothing, any ride is possible!

Pictou County workplaces are encouraged to support their employees to bike to work, and learn about ways to support and enable more commuting by bicycle.

6:30 pm Start: Kinsmen Lookoff, Terrace St., New Glasgow

Lead riders: Chris and Jack Higdon

Sponsor: Kinsmen Club of New Glasgow

Rider restrictions: None

Father and son team, Chris and Jack Higdon lead a ride from the Kinsmen Lookoff on Terrace St., New Glasgow, to Corinna’s Ice Cream stand in Stellarton. Free Ice cream for all riders has been generously sponsored by the Kinsmen Club of New Glasgow.

Saturday, June 9th

Bike Week Gran Fondo (35 km loop)

9:00 am start: Pictou County Wellness Centre, 2756 Westville Rd., New Glasgow

Sponsor: Big 8

Lead rider: Ahmed Nassrat

Rider restrictions: Maintain average speed of no less than 20km/hr

Join experienced road rider Ahmed Nassrat on a scenic Gran Fondo ride through the East River Valley. Start and end at the Pictou County Wellness Centre.

The Pictou County Active Transportation Committee has put together another amazing week of activities to celebrate Bike Week 2017. A fun-filled 8 days that promotes cycling in our area; the schedule includes something for all ages and abilities; mountain or road bikes; and has rides starting in a variety of locations across the county.
