If you ask a child, they would probably tell you there is no such thing as too much candy. This is probably the reason why Halloween is at the top of the list for favorite holidays. Unfortunately, there are more children who cannot enjoy the sugary treats, chocolates and chips like their peers due to allergies, diabetes or other health concerns.

Expanding Recreation Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities

This Saturday March  15th 2-4 PM, we invite people with disabilities and their friends to meet in the basement of the Christian Fellowship Church (Wheelchair access at rear).  Need transit?  Call CHAD (902) 928-1234 by Thursday.  This will be hosted by Active Pictou County and Let Abilities Work.  Details below.

TV viewers are amazed this week as the world?s disabled athletes compete in Sochi, Russia for gold in wheelchair curling, sledge hockey, para-snowboarding as well as alpine, biathlon and cross-country skiing.

Truth is most people with disabilities have many talents and abilities which go unrecognized, undeveloped and underutilized.  Their disability is so noticeable that we fail to look past it to see what remains.  It's a shame because when we fail to recognize and encourage the talents of those around us, too often they just give up, stop trying and fail to reach their true potential.

So, watching and admiring as pare-athletes demonstrate their skills, hopefully will help viewer learn to look beyond disabilities to become aware of all the abilities that remain.  Doing so gives greater appreciation for the potential of people with disabilities.

Folks with disabilities in Pictou County need more opportunities to develop, practice and demonstrate their other talents and abilities. So join us Saturday from 2-4 PM.  Come to enjoy a little snack, meet and greet each other and discuss how we can increase the number and type of activities available to people with disabilities.  There are numerous other para-sports to consider but also activities like wood working, puppetry, photography, cooking, bus tours etc.

Let Abilities Work promotes and provides social and recreational opportunities for people with disabilities to develop their talents and enjoy more fulfilling lives in our community. Our successes include wheelchair stick curling in Pictou; revitalized archery including para-archery in Westville and an accessible door to the Christian Fellowship Church basement for meetings.

Come and join us as we take the next steps together.
