Pictou County YMCA "Strong Song": Celebrating the Power of Youth

On May 24th lives are going to change. Through the efforts of staff, board members and the newly created Youth Leadership Corps - The YMCA is bringing internationally celebrated youth advocates Craig Keilburger, Molly Burke and Spencer West to Pictou County. Over 1500 local students will gather at the Wellness Centre to hear their messages of the potential of young people to cause positive change in their communities and in the world.

Bring Back Play in Your Community

Most of us have heard of Participaction. It’s a well-known Canadian organization that promotes the importance of daily physical activity for all Canadians with national media campaigns and catchy slogans.Their most recent message “Bring Back Play” speaks to the recent report that indicates 63% of Canadian children are inactive afterschool and on weekends. Hard to imagine? There are numerous reasons to explain how we got to this point; both parents working outside the home, longer commutes to school, more families living in urban areas, increase in structured recreation and sport activities, and our tendency to be drawn to screens for entertainment/relaxation, and it goes on.

Coaching Course Teaches the ABC’s of Physical Activity

Sport Nova Scotia, in partnership with Active Pictou County, will be hosting a coaching course in Pictou at The Palace Theatre on Saturday, April 27th from 9 am to 4 pm. The cost is $25/person. Based on the Canadian Sport for Life model of long-term athlete development, this NCCP workshop explores the themes of fair play, safety responsibility, and communication. The goal is to expose participants to an innovative process that will help them teach the Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS) of throwing, catching, jumping, striking, running, kicking, agility, and balance and coordination. FMS are the basis for developing Physical Literacy in children and form the foundation for future sport skill development and for the life-long enjoyment of physical activity. Learn how to OBSERVE and IMPROVE the FMS through this workshop.

Dalhousie University Transportation Collaboratory representatives will be hosting SHARE THE ROAD: Community Engagement Workshops on Thursday, April 11th in Pictou County to explore options for improving road safety for all users. This session will present successful campaign examples and invite participants to contribute ideas for how to make your streets safer for all users.
