The Pictou County Active Transporation Committee has put together an amazing week of activities to celebrate Bike Week 2012
A fun-filled seven days that promotes cycling in our area; the schedule includes something for all ages and abilities; mountain or road bikes; and has rides starting in a variety of locations across the county.
If the chance to ride the scenic routes isn't enough of an incentive - each event you attend earns you a ballot for an opportunity to win some fantastic prizes...valued at over $1000.00!
For those potential riders who would like to attend an event but don't have a proper bike - you can rent a bike from Pictou County Cycle at 928-0331 for only $11.50/day.
(mixed road and trail ride)
2 pm – New Glasgow Marina
Join the Trail’r Park Girls and the New Glasgow Police Department as they lead us
through the trails and roadways of New Glasgow. Experience the thrill of stopping
traffic on East River Rd as we bike behind a police cruiser! No one gets left behind,
so bring the whole family along. Full distance 9km with shorter distance options.
Separate ride for the very little folks on the Sampson. Ice cream for all participants
at the end of the ride.
Road Ride of the East River Valley
6 pm - Sobey’s Parking Lot, Stellarton
Enjoy a nice scenic ride of the valley! Riders doing the short loop (26.4 km) will enjoy a
nice easy, relaxed pace. The longer route option (52 km) is for the intermediate riders
who enjoy a little faster pace. Suitable for mountain or road bikes.
Beginner Mountain Bike Ride
6 pm - Trenton Park
Trenton Join the Trail'r Park Girls and the guys from Pictou County Cycle as they
help new mountain bikers learn how to master the terrain on the fabulous trails
in Trenton Park. All welcome. No experience necessary.
Women's Mountain Bike Ride
6 pm – Parkdale (Meet at the Curling Club)
The Trail’r Park Girls will be out on their weekly ride and will be hitting the
Trans Canada Trail. Join the Girls as they go as fast as the slowest rider on a
mountain biking adventure that doesn't require a lot of technical biking ability.
Women and girls of all ages welcome.
Road Ride of Greenhill, Durham, Scotsburn
6 pm - Cowan Street Irving, Westville Want to find out about the Heartland Tour?
Here’s your chance. Join the local Heartland Tour organizers for a relaxed-pace
23km ride through Greenhill, Durham, Sylvester and Alma. Kathy, Gordon,
and Pat will tell you all about the Tour taking place in July as you ride through
some of Pictou County’s beautiful rolling hills. Suitable for mountain or road bikes.
Road Ride of the Pictou/Braeshore Route
6 pm - RCMP Parking Lot, Pictou
Why not come out for a nice, short (20 km), easy ride leaving Pictou, going around
Braeshore and ending up in Pictou again. Suitable for mountain or road bikes.
Family Bike Ride and BBQ on the Jitney
10am and 12 noon - Scotsburn Recreation Centre
Join us for a mountain bike ride on the Jitney. A longer ride (50 km) will be leaving
at 10 am and a nice, short (10 km), easy ride will be leaving at noon. All the riders
will return to the Scotsburn Rec Centre for a BBQ beginning at 1 pm.
Michelin Junior Bike Event
1pm - Caladh Avenue (by parking lot near deCoste Entertainment Centre)
Michelin Junior Bike is open to children aged 5 to 11. Participants will ride a set route
with their age group and then return to the Michelin Junior Bike village where they can
enjoy snacks and prize draws, including the chance to win one of two $250 gift
certificates for a new bicycle. All registered receive a free helmet.
